Why We Built seekai: A Developer’s Frustration with Broken ATS Portals

Like millions of professionals, I have spent hundreds of hours in the modern job search trenches.

And if there is one universal truth every job seeker learns within their first 48 hours, it is this: the online job application experience is profoundly broken.

You spend hours crafting an immaculate, polished PDF resume. You open an opening at a company you admire. You click "Upload Resume".

Then, within three seconds:

  • The portal scrambles your dates.
  • It places your university degree in the "Company Name" field.
  • It chops your carefully formatted bullet points into raw unformatted text.
  • And worst of all, it requires you to re-type every single detail across 7 consecutive screens.

After experiencing this exact frustration for the 50th time on a Workday portal at 1:00 AM, I decided enough was enough. That was the night seekai was born.

The Technical Problem: Why Is ATS Software So Bad?

As software engineers, we wondered: Why do multibillion-dollar HR technology companies have forms that feel like they were coded in 2004?

The answer comes down to legacy enterprise software architecture:

  1. Ancient Parsing Engines: Many corporate ATS giants rely on optical character recognition (OCR) and regex-based parsing engines built 15 to 20 years ago. They simply cannot reliably parse modern multi-column layouts, clean vector typography, or nuanced tech titles.
  2. HR-Centric, Not Candidate-Centric: Enterprise ATS software is sold to corporate HR directors and compliance officers—not to candidates. The software prioritizes compliance reporting, liability shielding, and internal requisition workflows. The candidate's user experience is almost completely ignored.
  3. Siloed Databases: Because each employer configures their own isolated instance, there is no shared consumer layer. You must create account #47 just to apply for an engineering role at an insurance company.

The Two Bad Choices We Faced

When looking at available tools to solve this problem, we found only two extremes:

  1. The Dangerous "Auto-Apply Bots": Shady services promising to blast 1,000 applications while you sleep. These tools use headless scrapers, fail basic screening questions, hallucinate answers, and get candidates permanently banned by recruiters.
  2. Basic Autofill Tools That Break Constantly: Simple browser extensions that worked fine on 4-field forms, but completely choked when encountering Workday's dynamic JavaScript comboboxes or custom dropdowns.

Neither option respected the candidate. Neither option solved the real problem.

The Philosophy of seekai: Human-in-the-Loop Velocity

We built seekai around three non-negotiable principles:

1. Velocity Without Loss of Control (Human-in-the-Loop)

We didn't want a bot applying to random jobs in the middle of the night. We wanted a precision co-pilot. seekai handles 95% of the typing, form navigation, and field mapping, but highlights every input in a calming soft green. You take 10 seconds to verify your details, add personal flair, and press Submit yourself.

2. Bulletproof DOM Heuristics

We spent months building custom DOM adapters capable of handling the most complex, dynamic, and frustrating form inputs on the web—including Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, and Indeed. When seekai sees a date dropdown, it selects the right month and year naturally without triggering validation errors.

3. Absolute Privacy & Integrity

Your career history, salary expectations, and personal phone number belong to you. seekai guarantees zero training on public AI models, minimal browser permissions, and enterprise encryption.

The Result: Giving Hours Back to Job Seekers

Today, thousands of candidates use seekai to turn painful 25-minute applications into effortless 45-second submissions.

Instead of burning out after 3 applications, our users comfortably submit high-quality, tailored applications to every relevant opening, track them seamlessly on a built-in Kanban board, and spend their energy preparing for interviews instead of fighting form fields.

If you are tired of fighting broken ATS portals, we built seekai for you.
